My favorite time of the year is when the heat of the summer transitions into the beautiful sights and smells of fall. The trees begin to turn colors, the evenings turn crisp and chilly and the smell of burning fire pits fills the evening air. Vacations have wrapped up, school has started and people all across America are settling into their new schedules and routines as the fall sports season begins.
What better way to use your leftover Halloween candy than with a fire pit and the fireside staple–S’mores.
S’mores are a simple concept really. Graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate. The marshmallow gets melted until nice and gooey and the chocolate & marshmallow are combined and sandwiched in between two graham crackers. Pretty easy, right? Well, it is if you want a basic S’more. Did you know that there are many other ways to enjoy your favorite fireside treat? As there are many ways to make your S’more, there are just as many ways to cook your favorite S’more (or not cook it at all).
First, let’s explore ingredients.
Our new family favorite is a S’more made with a peanut butter cup rather than a chocolate bar. You could also use any candy bar that you like rather than plain chocolate. Adding fruit is becoming popular in our part of the country as well, banana and peach slices seem to be the favorites. Mixing fruit, chocolate, marshmallow and graham crackers adds another layer of flavor and helps to balance out the sweetness of the treat.
Let’s Make a S’more
Secondly, let’s look into the different ways that s’mores can be made.
- You can make S’mores in an ice cream cone
- S’more Dip
- Individual cups (in a muffin tin or ramekin)
- The new way is in a fondue (can be made in a slow cooker or heavy duty pan)
S’mores Fondue Recipe (Slow Cooker Style)
- 15 ounces milk chocolate bar, broken into bits
- 1 10 ounce package large marshmallows
- 1/2 cup half-and-half or light cream
- Assorted dippers (such as graham cracker snack sticks, halved graham cracker squares, and/or large marshmallows)
- In a slow cooker, stir together chocolate, marshmallows, and half-and-half.
- Cover and cook on low-heat setting for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, stirring once. Whisk until mixture is smooth.
- Serve fondue with your selected dippers!
When my kids want me to pack them a S’more for their lunch, I simply use graham crackers and put chocolate or chocolate/peanut butter spread on the cracker, add marshmallow fluff and there you have an easy, much less messy version of a S’more that the kids can take to school in their lunch box!
