I just received Touch the Brightest Star by Christie Matheson (Greenwillow Books, Harper Collins Publishing) for my three year old daughter. I only wish that I would have had this book sooner! Touch the Brightest Star is a book that my children could read over and over, there always something new to see on each page.
This story is a beautiful way for a young child end to their day. It feels to me as if you are looking out your window at a simple tree watching the sky darken and change through the night. You start by waving goodbye to the sun of the day and tapping the fireflies to bring them into the sky. As the stars come out you make a wish and watch the star formations appear in the night sky. By gently touching the pages as you go you say good night to all of the softly drawn nighttime animals. You say good night to deer and the most adorably drawn owls.
When all is done, you close your eyes and relax. The dark page with nothing written except “Shhhh” is sweet and calming at the end of our day. The story ends with the promise that when you open your eyes again the magic of another day will begin.
The final page is my most favorite part, it is what allows children to grow with this story. The final page explains “how the magic happens”. Once a child is old enough to ask questions they can learn why things happen at night. There is an explanation written for all of the nighttime elements that were mentioned in the story. Children can learn why fireflies light up, why the moon glows, even about the flowers they saw changing throughout the pages.
Touch the Brightest Star was an instant hit with my children and I believe it will stay a favorite for many more years!

My son always loved books and I loved to read to him. It was our nightly quiet time together. I cannot remember the name of the series (it’s been 20 years) but it was a children’s series of books about dragons and such.

we’ve always done story time before bed, but there hasn’t been a consistent story that we read every night. we always pick out 1-3 and read those together. right now she’s in a curious george phase though, so there’s a lot of those adventures.

I don’t remember what my favorite story was as a kid. Probably a Dr Seuss, we had a lot of his books. My kids love to read though. It’s fun watching them learn to read, and they would love this book.

My little ones loooooove to read. We usually read a bible story or 2 from the Jesus Storybook Bible every night. Occasionally we will switch it up and read Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site but they really love to listen to David and Goliath (we have boys so this is a favorite) and the story of Jonah so we just read from the Bible more often.
