D-Link MovieNite Plus Streaming Media Player (DSM-312)
With the proliferation today of different outlets for consuming movies, TV shows, and music, it can become challenging to find a way to watch and listen to your home TV. The irony is that watching Netflix or Youtube on your smartphone is easier than enjoying your home entertainment center.
D-Link has introduced a streaming media player that brings all those fun media apps you enjoy on your smartphone straight to your big screen. Netflix, Youtube, Hulu, Pandora and more can all be easily enjoyed with the new D-Link MovieNite Plus. You may even be able to reduce your cable TV bill with all the media options provided.
The unit itself is a sleek, glossy black square approximately 4inches x 4inches and about 1 inch high. A very small footprint indeed, which becomes important if you are space constrained or just want the minimalist look. There are no physical buttons on the unit. A small LED on the front glows green when on and orange when in standby.
The connection panel on the rear is clean and simple. A power port to use with the supplied Adapter or, a wired LAN/Ethernet port if you must, HDMI port for your TV/receiver and an old school composite AV port in case your TV hasn’t caught up with the Netflix area. Oddly D-Link includes the composite AV cable but not an HDMI cable. WiFi B/G/N compatible.
When you are wiring your unit into your A/V system, you will need a line of sight to use with the included IR remote. This is one of the few knocks I have with the D-Link unit. An RF remote, like your kid’s Xbox controllers, would allow you to hide the unit away. As I note below a quick visit to your smartphone’s app store can solve this.
Set up is a breeze. Once connected, power on and the system immediately take you to a WiFi set up screen. Find your network, enter your passcode if you have your network protected (you do right?) and off you go to the home screen. Keep in mind all of the engagement with the D-Link unit is via the remote control so you will have one more in your collection. D-Link offers a free app for Android and Apple devices that permit you to control via smartphone. The setup of the app was easy and functions as the remote. Of course, you will need accounts and login credentials to use Netflix, etc.
