Beauty and the Beast by An Leysen
Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there lived a merchant with his two daughters. The eldest daughter was spoiled and vain, and the youngest preferred to read all day. She was so pretty everyone called her “Belle”. One day, the merchant got lost in the forest and stumbled upon a castle that looked enchanted. Suddenly, he stood face-to-face with the castle’s sole inhabitant: a beast! The Beast would spare the merchant’s life on one condition: he must send one of his daughters to live in the castle. Against her father’s will, Belle went to the Beast’s castle. Age Range 5-6
A Cup of Tea? by Eric La Branche & Margaret Anne Suggs
When mommy got home from work today, she was “oh, so tired” and couldn’t play.
I had hoped she would go on a bug hunt with me, but she just needed to relax with a “nice cuppa tea”. A warm picture book about a boy longing to play with his parents. And about tea!
Our Take: When mom comes home she too tired to play. She just wants a nice cup of tea. When Aunt Margaret comes over they spend all day talking and drinking tea. Then dad comes home and wants tea too so the young boy is left to play by himself when all he wants to do is play with his parents. The boy invites his parents to a fancy tea party but he forgets the tea. Find out what happens without the tea. This story is set in a playful rhyme. Age Range 4-6
Benji & the 24 Pound Banana Squash by Alan C. Fox & Eefje Kuijl
A story for anyone who has ever had a dream of doing something really, really big. In this delightful tale, Benji wants to grow the biggest banana squash ever. In spring, when the soil is soft, he plants the seeds he has saved from the previous summer. He waters and waits, anxiously watching over the plant as the tiny squash begins to grow. Each day he lovingly measures its progress. On harvest day, the squash has grown so gigantic from all his love and attention that Benji can barely carry it. When the squash is cooked up with butter and brown sugar, everyone in the family enjoys a mouth-watering, homegrown treat.
This charming garden-to-table story not only teaches children where food comes from but also that patience and nurturing pay off with delicious rewards. With beautiful, often humorous, illustrations, everyone will want to read this charming book over and over again. Listen to this interview by New York Times bestselling author Alan C. Fox on his first children’s book! Age Range 3-6
Tobor by Guido van Genechten
Ben receives a very special present for his fifth birthday. Unlike Ben’s stuffed animals who can’t move on their own or talk, Tobor is different; with a press of his square nose, Tobor comes alive, suggesting and playing games, talking and asking questions and soon he becomes Ben’s best friend. Sometimes friendship develops where you least expect it.
Our Take: Ben loves to play with his four animal friends. They always do what Ben wants but it’s getting boring. On this fifth birthday, he gets Tobar. Tobar knows how to do a lot of things and now Ben isn’t so bored. Age Range 5-6
A Book for Benny by Judith Koppens & Marja Meijer
It’s raining. No problem, because Sam is enjoying her book. Her little dog Benny doesn’t like reading. It wants to play. Sam tries to persuade Benny reading is fun. Would he like to have a different book perhaps? They go to the library together to find the right book for Benny. A funny and touching picture book about a little girl and her doggy, and about the joy of reading.
Our Take: Sam takes Benny to the library to find a book just for him. Unfortunately, Benny is not allowed in the library so he must wait out in the rain. Sam looks for books just for Benny bringing each one to the window for him to see. Sam finally finds the perfect book, a cookbook, I Love Sausages: 101 Recipes! Age Range 4-6

I’m drawn to A Book for Benny. It’s a cute mental image of a dog waiting outside of a library, uninterested, and getting wet, but finally getting a book that appeases him. I think my kids would enjoy this book.

Beauty and the beast speaks out to me because it shows that a kind and patient heart can see through a wicked person that they are still a good person inside and when given the chance, can bring out the good in them. A book for Benny speaks out to me too because my kids enjoy reading a lot and love the colorful illustrations.
