This futon could not have come at a better time! In the kid’s playroom, more like the “video game room,” they had a nice comfy, cozy couch, had being the key word. I will say that it was a two-year-old couch, and we didn’t pay a lot of money for it maybe $500, so our expectations were not that high. Sure enough, they ended up busting the couch’s frame, making it soggy when they sat it in. They never complained about it, though, but then again, they are boys!
I have never been a big futon person; I just never liked their looks. But then I was offered the chance to review the 9 by Novogratz Linen Futon. While I liked the color in the pictures online, this futon had more of a modern feel to it, while my style leans more toward Amish country chic. So my dilemma was, do I at least get a new couch so they can be comfortable or forgo the futon all because it didn’t match my style?
Needless to say, because you are reading this review, the kids wanted a new place to sit, so they won out! The Futon came in one large box with the main seating area, side arms, legs, pillows, and bolts. After unpacking, we were in disbelief that they would forget to send the arms, but they were hiding in the zippered storage area underneath the seat—disaster averted!
The directions state that while two people are optimal for assembly, it can be done with only 1 person, and the estimated assembly time is 30 minutes. That, my friends, is hogwash! At some points, it took 3 of us to figure out and hold the seat at the angle it needed to bolt on the arms. It took a little over two and a half hours to complete this futon finally. It was quite frustrating because you had to hold the seating area up while trying to attach the arm, which the bolts didn’t want to screw into. Come on, how is 1 person supposed to do all that?? After a few misplaced words, a few time-outs to think how it could be done, and what other options we had, we finally completed assembly!
I would have liked to have seen the legs in dark gray or black to match the fabric. The sparkly gold does give it a pop of color, though, giving it that vintage 60s vibe.
The futon has 2 bolsters (cylinder-shaped) side pillows in the same linen fabric as the futon. I love the color gray. It is one of those neutral colors that makes decorating easy, as you can go with any color to accent.
Voila, our finished futon! The kids were so excited that once it was up, they each took turns sleeping on it for a night. I think their goal was to stay up, play video games all night, and then conk out whenever. They never made it past 10! While I do love the color, it still is a bit more modern than I prefer. It is very different from a regular couch as it is more firm. The kids love it and know that it is something you can not just pluck down in, and if this one breaks, they are sitting on the floor!
