We are a circus family; by that, I don’t mean that our house is like a circus (although some days I feel like it may be). What I mean is that we look forward to going to the Ringling Bros. Circus every year. And this year did not disappoint.

We got there early to take advantage of the pre-show event. They have an elephant doing painting, clowns out trying their tricks, a wardrobe you can try on, and a giant bouncy obstacle course. They also involve everyone, including parents, in a dance party!! Plus, you can be right on the circus floor, which feels pretty cool and is a great spot for some pre-show pictures.
Once the show started, it was one Xtreme talent after the next. My kids, son 8 and daughter 6, liked the animal acts, including the elephants, lions, and dogs doing tricks. We all enjoyed that they talked about their training techniques during the performance. My son especially liked the Concrete Jungle act. It was a combination of BMX riding, trampoline artists, and parkour athletes twisting and flipping on mats, ramps, and even a specially designed tower. It was pretty Xtreme!
My daughter’s favorite was Xquisite Beauty. She loved the Circus Skydivers as they dove and bounced from bungee cords in an amazing display that involved teamwork and athletics. The black lights made it seem out of this world!!
We rounded out our evening with a program that, at $15, seemed quite a steal because my kids like to look at it repeatedly to remember all the different performers and animal acts. The full-color book shows behind-the-scenes pictures and is full of information about how the performers prepare and practice for the big show!
Although I had some pretty sleepy kids on the way home from the event, both woke up the next morning talking about their favorite performers and all the funny clowns. We will all look forward to next year when the circus returns to town and wonder what they will come up with next!

I love the circus I have all of my life. Now I read about how the elephants are treated and I don’t go anymore. Makes me sad. Sorry to be a downer!
