UPDATE 8/9/13: I wanted to share my new Pink Ubooly with you. I think my niece is really going to enjoy playing with this!
Around Christmastime, I received an Ubooly plush to review. If you don’t know what an Ubooly is, your child is in for a treat! Ubooly is a stuffed plush that comes to life when used with your iPhone or iPod (the Android is coming soon). You can watch my video review to see what he is all about.
Within the last few weeks, the makers of Ubooly have released a new feature called the Ubooly Lab – this feature is pretty cool (and we thought he was pretty cool before) With Ubooly Lab you are able to customize what your child likes. There is a lot to choose from too: food, colors, hobbies, animals, and topics. That way Ubooly knows exactly what your child likes and incorporates that into playtime.
I was able to download several of the lessons: Addition, Ocean, Space, Spanish, and Grammer. The content packs are all designed to be age-appropriate for different age ranges (3-9). Content packs are written by a large team of elementary teachers & comedians. Each of the lessons is then the theme for play between your child and Ubooly. I really like this feature because while my son thinks he is just playing, he is really learning in a fun way.
Here is a synopsis of the lessons I choose:
Space:
- An interactive look at outer space
- Sun, Moon, stars, and solar system jokes and games
- Stories and quizzes that are playful and challenging
- Hands-on activities that exercise the brain and stimulate curiosity
- Child-directed space exploration games
Addition:
- A fun and practical introduction to addition
- Riddles, stories, and jokes that exercise the brain
- Challenging and fun story problems
- Odd and even number basics
Ocean:
- An interactive look at our oceans, beaches, and wildlife
- Games and interactive stories
- Hands-on, guided experiments
- Deep-sea exploration activities
- Songs, jokes, and quizzes
- This pack features hands-on, guided experiments that work best with adult
Spanish:
- Spanish for beginners
- Phrases and greetings
- Foods and colors
- Numbers, animals, days of the week, and beyond
- Songs, jokes, and quizzes
Grammar:
- A fun, interactive approach to grammar, writing, and speech
- Playful stories, fun quizzes, and word scavenger hunts
- Interactive grammar games
- Sentence structure and components
- Games, Songs, and challenging story problems
The more your child engages with Ubooly & complete content, they will be rewarded with coins that will allow them to buy accessories to further customize their new friend. You can choose from different styles of glasses or even an eye patch, also different hairstyles and facial expressions. You are also able to redeem coins for foods and items to decorate Ubooly’s home. My son chooses to make his look like a football player.
Overall, my son really enjoys playing with his Ubooly. It is great to travel with, take in the car or play with while grocery shopping. There is plenty of activities to keep your kiddo occupied!

I think its really cute! My kids love using our smartphones and I think this would help to be able to have the program on for them to play instead of free rain of the phone and screwing it all up!

I like the idea of this and how interactive it is, but I don’t care for the look. I wish it was more in animal shapes. I can see my grand kids playing/learning with this.
