A Review Wire Exclusive! Interview with Dora Herself: Fátima Ptacek
1 – Tell me a little about yourself:
My name is Fátima Ptacek. I’m 11 years old and live in New York City. Outside of work, I’m really like a typical girl my age. I enjoy spending time with my friends; I am an avid reader who falls asleep reading every night; and, oh …I actually love school! Right now, I’m in an academy for intellectually gifted children in New York City’s public school system, and I’m working hard so that I can attend an Ivy League university like Harvard or Yale someday. I love acting, and I hope to be able to do something with my career to help make a better life for children in the world. My long-term goal is to become the first female president of the United States!
2 – What’s the best part about being Dora?
The best part about being Dora is knowing that I connect with millions of kids every day and put smiles on their faces. I’m so proud to be a part of Dora the Explorer because the show teaches valuable lessons, like problem-solving skills, the importance of determination, and being loyal to friends. I also get to teach Spanish language and share my Latin culture.
3 – What is a typical day like for you?
I guess you’re probably more interested in a work day, so let me share my typical schedule with you: I get up in the morning at 6 am, get ready, and go to school. My mom picks me up from school, and we take the train to a studio. I usually get started on homework on the train. On set, I record for anywhere between one to three hours, but we usually take a break to eat dinner. The crew at Nickelodeon is great, and they make work on Dora the Explorer lots of fun. After a record, I may have an audition, or I may head to the gym for gymnastics training. When I get home in the evening, I finish my homework and read until I fall asleep.
4 – What has been your favorite episode of Dora that you have been in? What about before you were the voice?
My favorite episode so far has been “Dora’s Easter Adventure,” which premiered on Wednesday. The episode has great music and is extremely interactive with the kids in our audience. Also, we had lots of fun behind the scenes – actually, behind the microphone – working on this project.
My favorite episode from when I used to watch Dora when I was little is called “The Chocolate Tree.” It had a song called “Bate, Bate, Chocolate” that I used to sing over and over again with my grandmother. Great memories. I loved it!
5 – What did you do before you became the voice of Dora?
I guess you’re asking about what I did in my career as an actress, so let me tell you about that: I started acting professionally when I was 5 years old. I’ve had roles in about a dozen films and appeared on TV shows like A Gifted Man, Body of Proof, Royal Pains, Sesame Street (where I worked with First Lady Michelle Obama), and even a couple of episodes of SNL. I’ve also been in many TV commercials over the years. One of my most challenging roles was in a dramatic Off-Broadway show called Love Divided By / Times Three, where I had a lead role portraying a troubled child living in a dysfunctional family. I think that working on stage in front of a live audience really helped me to learn a lot about acting. As an actress, I’ve been really lucky to meet some very interesting people, travel to some cool places, learn a lot of important lessons, and have very interesting experiences because of my work. I’m so grateful.
6 – What adventure would you like to see Dora go on next?
I think it would be really cool for Dora to take an adventure in China. I’ve been studying Mandarin Chinese, and I’m really interested in Chinese history and culture. We could visit famous sites like the Great Wall and the Forbidden Kingdom, take a boat along the Yangtze River, and we can learn some Chinese words along the way. I think it would be fascinating for kids to join Dora on an adventure in China.
7 – What is your favorite food?
My parents always say that I have a “sophisticated palate,” but some of my friends have other ways to describe my taste. To put it simply, I love food that other kids think is unusual. For instance, some of my favorite foods are snails, octopus, tripe, oxtail, jellyfish, and even guinea pig (which happens to be a delicacy in Ecuador, and I am half-Ecuadorian). I guess if I have to pick one type of food to call my favorite, though, I’d say it’s Japanese. I love sushi!
8 – What do you do for fun?
Outside of work, I’m involved in many fun activities, which keeps things interesting in my life. I’m a USAG Level 7 gymnast, so I train three to four hours a day, four days per week. I also have been studying Mandarin Chinese and taking part in English equestrian riding for years. At school, I sit on the Student Council and organize school functions, like dances and assemblies. I have really great friends at school, at the gym, in Chinese school, and at the barn. They are all very supportive, and they help keep life fun! However, I have to be honest and tell you that working on Dora the Explorer is really so much fun, too! The crew at Nickelodeon makes sure that our recording sessions are entertaining. Outside of the studio, I truly enjoy acting jobs, seeing my friends at auditions, and meeting lots of wonderful people at public appearances. I consider myself very lucky, and I’m so grateful for all the opportunities Nickelodeon has given me.
