Plain composition notebooks don’t have to stay plain! With a few inexpensive craft supplies, kids can turn basic school supplies into something that shows off their personality. These DIY notebook ideas are easy ways to add color, patterns, names, stickers, and plenty of creativity before heading back to school.

Decorating notebooks can also be a fun back-to-school activity for kids. Pick up inexpensive composition books or use notebooks you already have, pull out the craft supplies, and let everyone create a design of their own. Just remember to keep decorations fairly flat so notebooks can still slide easily into backpacks and desks.
Easy DIY Notebook Ideas
1. DIY Glitter Notebook

Give a basic composition book some sparkle with glitter.
Start by covering the work surface to make cleanup easier. Apply craft glue to the notebook cover and sprinkle glitter over the glued areas. Shake off the excess and allow everything to dry completely. To help keep loose glitter from ending up inside a backpack, finish the cover with a clear craft sealer appropriate for the materials you’re using.
Kids can cover the entire notebook in one color or use painter’s tape to create stripes, geometric shapes, or color-blocked designs.
2. Washi Tape Notebook

Washi tape is one of the simplest DIY notebook ideas because there is very little mess.
Cover the front with horizontal or diagonal strips of colorful washi tape. Mix patterns and colors, or stick with two or three coordinating designs. Leave a space in the center for a label with the student’s name or school subject.
3. Sticker Collage Notebook

Use that sticker collection by creating a notebook covered in favorite things.
Kids can choose stickers based on a theme such as animals, sports, food, flowers, space, or favorite colors. Arrange the stickers before pressing them down permanently so there’s room for larger designs. Add a name or subject label when finished so the notebook is easy to identify.
4. Personalized Name Notebook

Make it easy to tell notebooks apart by putting the student’s name front and center.
Use alphabet stickers, adhesive letters, paint pens, or letters cut from colorful paper to spell out a first name, initials, or nickname. Decorate around the name with doodles, stars, flowers, lightning bolts, or other simple designs.
This idea is especially useful when several kids in the family have similar-looking school supplies.
5. Doodle Notebook

Turn the entire notebook cover into a blank canvas.
Start with a plain notebook and use permanent markers or paint pens designed for the cover material. Kids can fill the space with small doodles, patterns, words, shapes, and drawings. Try hearts, stars, smiley faces, flowers, sports equipment, school supplies, or abstract patterns. Older kids and teens can create more detailed black-and-white doodle designs.
6. Scrapbook Paper Notebook

Scrapbook paper makes it easy to completely change the look of an inexpensive composition book.
Choose a favorite pattern and trim the paper to fit the front cover. Attach it securely with an appropriate paper adhesive, smoothing it as you go to prevent bubbles or wrinkles. Add a coordinating paper label for the student’s name and subject.
Use scraps left over from the cover to decorate matching folders or bookmarks.
7. Color-Blocked Notebook

You don’t need an elaborate design to make a notebook stand out.
Divide the cover into several sections and decorate each area with a different color. Depending on the notebook material, you can use paper, markers, paint, or washi tape. Try school colors, a rainbow palette, favorite colors, or different shades of the same color.
It’s one of the easiest DIY notebook ideas to customize for kids of different ages.
8. Fabric-Covered Notebook

Have leftover fabric from another project? Use it to give a composition book a completely different look.
Choose a lightweight fabric and cut it slightly larger than the notebook cover. Attach it with an adhesive suitable for both fabric and the notebook surface, then carefully trim or fold the edges for a neat finish. Look for fun prints featuring animals, florals, sports, geometric patterns, or other designs that match the student’s personality.
9. Positive Message Notebook

Turn a notebook into a little encouragement kids can carry throughout the school day.
Add a favorite positive message to the front using letter stickers, markers, or cut-paper letters. Keep it short with phrases such as “You’ve Got This,” “Dream Big,” “Be Kind,” or another saying that means something to your child. Decorate around the message with simple shapes, stickers, or doodles. Kids can even come up with their own message before decorating.
10. School Subject Notebooks

Make notebooks easier to grab between classes by giving each school subject its own design.
Decorate a math notebook with numbers and geometric shapes, add planets and stars to a science notebook, or cover a reading notebook with books and letters. Assigning each subject a different color can also help kids quickly recognize which notebook they need.
For younger students, this can be a simple way to practice staying organized while still letting them personalize their school supplies.
Make Back-to-School Supplies More Fun
You don’t need expensive supplies or complicated projects to make school gear feel special. Most of these DIY notebook ideas can be customized with craft supplies you already have at home, and no two notebooks need to look the same.
Set out several decorating options and let kids choose what they like. Younger children may prefer stickers and colorful tape, while older kids might enjoy doodling, fabric, personalized lettering, or a more coordinated design.
It’s also worth checking what you already have before buying supplies for these projects. Leftover scrapbook paper, stickers, ribbon, fabric, markers, and washi tape can all be put to good use.

Very cute! I can see me with glitter all over!
What a cute idea! As long as all of the glitter stays on the notebook! LOL!
