AfterShokz offers a more comfortable, healthy, and safe listening experience with two models of ear-free headphones: AfterShokz Sport ($60) and AfterShokz Mobile($70).
I received a pair of the AfterShokz Sport Headphones to try and review. Once they arrived and I pulled them out of the package, they were different from other headphones I have used. Unlike regular headphones that cover the ear entirely or have buds stuck in the ear, the AfterShokz headphones are placed on the outside of your ear instead of inside. You might be asking how and why the outside of the ear. The sound is delivered through the listener’s cheekbones to the inner ear. Sound waves can get to the inner ear through direct vibration of the bones in the head, which carry the vibrations directly to the inner ear, bypassing the eardrums. Which if you think about it, makes it a better choice for bikers or runners, that way you can hear the oncoming traffic.
The headphones are one piece, and you place the band around the back of your head. One wire comes down and can be clipped onto your clothing. It contains a power button and an in-line microphone. The only downside is that you do need to charge the headphones. A fully charged battery takes 3 hours and lasts about 15 hours, but the charger is included when you purchase. The headphones will automatically shut off after 15 minutes if unused.
AfterShokz Sport headphones are lightweight, sweat, and water-resistant. They feature an in-line control and a standard 3.5mm connector that fits iPhones, iPods, iPads, MP3 players, and most smartphones. The headphones come with a water-repellent storage tote and a lifetime warranty.
The sound of these headphones is outstanding. I have been using them at the pool with the kids. I am able to not only hear the music but also listen to the kids! I am very surprised that headphones that sit on the outside of your ear can deliver such good sound!
