Summer break is upon us and trying to find things to keep the kiddos occupied, at least long enough for me to write a post is a challenge on some days. Surprise Ride, a monthly subscription service ships a different box each month directly to your child that is filled with hands-on learning. The boxes are geared towards ages 6 to 11 and come in a monthly, 3, 6 or 12 month subscription option.
I received the April Box called Ancient Egypt, past boxes included Birdsville, Chocolate, Hidden Treasures, and Mars. Egypt isn’t something I would normally be interested in so this gave us an opportunity to explore a part of the past that I might not have otherwise done so with my six-year-old.
The box came with a Surprise Ride Guide that talks about what is in the box, a card that gives a bit of info on how the activities tie into the theme of the box and pamphlet with facts about the topic of the box, in this case, Egypt. My pamphlet talks about King Tut, Egypt, Hieroglyphics, the pyramids, papyrus, and a few fun facts.
Included in the box was this Pyramid Dig where you use the included tools to dig for the buried treasure.
The book included was Flat Stanley and The Great Egyptian Grave Robbery. In this second book in Flat Stanley’s Worldwide Adventures, Stanley travels to Egypt by airmail, where he learns to decode hieroglyphics, visits a bazaar, and explores an ancient pharaoh’s tomb. Come to find out that Stanley has been accidentally working for grave robbers. Can he save the pyramid’s magnificent treasures? My son loves to read so this is one of our nightly chapter books that he reads to me! This has inspired me to print off a Flat Stanley and we plan to take him on our adventures this summer.
He also gets to design his own Adventure Bag using Egyptian stencils and fabric markers. And then a few fun extras included papyrus to create a treasure map, a hieroglyphics postcard (we might use this with Flat Stanley), chamomile tea made from chamomile flowers from Egypt and Falafel Chips, a little snack to have while creating!
