Today celebrates the fruit-filled holiday cake that may or may not be a holiday treat in your house! Fruitcake is made with chopped candied or dried fruit, nuts, and spices and sometimes soaked in spirits. This cake dates back to the Romans, who would mix pine nuts, barley mash, pomegranate seeds, raisins, and honeyed wine and shape it into a cake. Then, by the early 19th century, the recipe as we know it today started taking shape.
It seems fitting that National Fruitcake Day is after Christmas, just in case you want to re-gift it! But these fruitcake recipes below may have you singing a different tune and hoarding it all for yourself!

I wondered what all the comments about fruit cake was all about. I had never tried one but always heard how people hated them. I finally tasted one about 10 years ago and I have to say as long as they don’t include cherries (I’m allergic to them) I didn’t love them but it was ok. The fruitcake cookies don’t look bad.
