I have always wanted to travel to Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway, and Sweden), and while I am at it Iceland and Finland! I am fascinated by the culture, history, and architecture. But if I was going to go I would want to spend at least a month traveling around, taking it all in. Where would you like to spend a month exploring?

The Adventures of Lily Huckleberry in Scandinavia by Audrey Smit is the first in a series (next stop is Japan), providing a strong female role model who encourages children to be brave and adventurous.

In a village where the flowers grow as big as trees, lives a brave little girl named Lily Huckleberry. As a member of the Worldwide Adventure Society, Lily has a magic globe that takes her on whimsical adventures around the world. Lily goes to Scandinavia for a Midsummer party, where she finds herself ker-splat in the middle of a strawberry mystery. As Lily travels around Scandinavia to save Midsummer, she meets a menagerie of friends, explores Nordic culture, and discovers the thrill of being brave enough to take big risks.

In this book, kids will learn about Scandinavian traditions such as the Midsummer celebration, with its flower crowns and maypole dancing, to historic landmarks, like the Little Mermaid of Denmark and the stunning fjords of Norway. Nordic characters like elves, Vikings and the Swedish horse, Dala, appear throughout the journey, and common Scandinavian words, like “Mormor” or “Fika,” are introduced with helpful speech bubbles for proper pronunciation.

Illustrated story with 96 pages of colorful illustrations. The book also includes a map of Scandinavia, fun facts, and a glossary so kids can depend on their knowledge of the region.
