One of my favorite Cincinnati Christmas traditions is the Boar’s Head Festival. We have been attending since 2011, and I get excited and look forward to this show every year! What amazes me is that over 350 people come together as cast, orchestra, choir, and backstage helpers to put on this performance, and they only have one dress rehearsal three hours before the first performance!
While ticket distribution occurred on December 13th, all 2400 tickets are now gone. But the good news is they do encourage people without tickets to come 1 hour early to the performance of their choice and sign up with the Head Usher, and 15 minutes before the performance, they call names for available spots.
Below is a clip of The Wassail Carol set to images of the performance:
The Boar’s Head and Yule Log Festival is rooted in ancient times (1340) when the boar was sovereign of the forest. A ferocious beast and menace to humans it was hunted as a public enemy. At Roman feasts, the boar was the first dish served. Like our Thanksgiving turkey, the roasted boar was a staple of medieval banquets. As Christian beliefs overtook pagan customs in Europe, the presentation of a boar’s head at Christmas came to symbolize the triumph of the Christ Child over sin.
