This borrowed kaleidoscopic motif is from a 16th-century tile panel in The Met's Islamic Art collection. Spectacularly decorated with ecstatic florals in sumptuous jewel tones, the original tiles were crafted in the Iznik kilns, illustrious workshops that produced magnificent ceramic wares for the Ottoman court. Iznik tile production surged in the mid-16th century due to an increase in royal buildings in Istanbul. Examples of these beautiful tiles continue to adorn the walls of mosques and palaces today.
