Jimmy Chartron and the Lost Keystone
Written by J.T. Michaels
Author J.T. Michaels brings a fantasy tale of an ancient war, a modern-day murder mystery, mystical creatures, and memorable characters in his masterfully written young adult novel, Jimmy Chartron and the Lost Keystone.
The Great War ended a century ago. Peace reigns across the eight countries. Epic tales of heroic men and women of those times are recounted in song and story. Yet, history seems to have forgotten a young battlefield healer, Tessa Marlise…
Sixteen-year-old Jimmy Chartron has just enrolled at the Navale Academy of Eagleon, his mind set on becoming an electrician. A chance magical encounter binds him to the trapped soul of Tessa Marlise. As Jimmy struggles to deal with this shocking development, murder and mystery unravel in the academy. Caught in the middle of everything, Jimmy realizes that a larger evil is afoot and that only two things can stop it: himself and the ghost in his head. Ages 13-18 | 336 Pages

Interview with Author, J.T. Michaels
Can you tell us what went into deciding to write a coming-of-age story in the fantasy genre?
- For me, character growth has always been a must in fantasy stories. That’s the hook that keeps readers invested in the storyline. I wanted readers to have a relatable protagonist, and a character with sorely developed social skills seemed the way to go.
How long have you been writing?
- I’ve done some odd writing jobs here and there for school magazines, but this particular novel cost me four years of sleepless nights.
What advice would you give an author just starting out?
- Persevere and just throw your ideas onto paper – or a word document. It’s more important to get all your ideas out AND finish it through to the end before you start your first round of edits. I can’t even compare the current version of The Lost Keystone with the very first draft I wrote. Apart from Tessa and Jimmy, they’re two completely different stories. But that’s usually how it goes: throw everything onto paper and refine everything over and over until you get a gem.
What was your favorite or least favorite part of writing this book?
- Reading your own manuscript for the fortieth or fiftieth time makes you jaded. You start losing the reader’s perspective and thinking that the whole story is boring and predictable. I ran into this issue several times and what I did was step away from the manuscript for weeks and then go back with a fresh pair of eyes.
Did you run into writer’s block at any point? And how or what helped you overcome it?
- I think writer’s block can happen anytime, but so does inspiration. Usually, when the latter hits, I’d take notes or get up in the middle of the night to do some writing. And coffee helps.
How long did it take you to write this book?
- Four years of writing, ten years of dreaming.
Do you plan on writing another book? Can you share?
- Jimmy’s story is only beginning. Book two is well underway and the story will be even more expansive. We’ll see Jimmy coming more into his own and a huge plot twist awaits readers at the end of the book.
How did you celebrate when you finished writing the book?
- I took a much-needed vacation to Seattle at the advice of my lovely hairdresser.
