Ways to get MORE Family Fun without Spending A lot of Money:

  • – We joined Netfix, for as low as 10 bucks a month we get unlimited instant movies and unlimited DVD’s. We can get new movies as well as the cheesy shows we want to show the boys for one low price. We now always have something to watch.
  • – We have a Recreations Outlet close that offers FREE days/times where we can go in and play on all the swingsets & play things. This is especially nice for those chilly mornings and rainy days.
  • – Purchase a membership to a local aquarium, zoo or museum. The fee up front might be a bit much but you can go for free for the year and membership will pay for itself. The way I figured it, it cost us only 8 dollars total for all 5 of us (including parking, admission and unlimited rides) per visit to the Zoo if we go at least 2 times a month for 7 months out of the year! Not too bad!! Plus at the zoo, they have special activities every month so it gives us something to look forward too.
  • – I have an iPhone and love checking the app store. I only get FREE apps that my little one can play. I try to get a few new ones before we go on an outing, dinner or shopping and put in a folder just for him. That way when he go’s to play and he “discovers” a new games it keeps him entertained, at least for awhile.

The classics are still the best — taking a walk around the neighborhood; a trip to the local park; an afternoon baking with Mom; a rousing game of Go Fish or Candy Land; or a trip to the library followed by snuggling up in the rocking chair at home for story time. None of these cost anything but Mom and Dad’s time, which is still the best gift you can give your children.

My tip is to go to amusement parks that you can just pay for the rides you want to go on, especially for little kids- it doesnt make sense to pay a lot of money when they can only go on a handful of rides.

I take advantage of the children eat free with an adult meal, go the the local art & craft shows, go the the free project making at Lowes & Home Depot, make a picnic lunch at the park and go to the library sometimes they offer a free storybook reading time for the children.

    Family tradition:
My 4 children are in their 20’s and 30’s, so how do you get “adults” to do an Easter egg hunt?
Put the eggs out in the yard, also with the eggs are water balloons. Therefore, they have a chance to soak everyone as they collect their eggs.

I just moved down here from Maine, we usually have at least a foot of snow still on the ground at Easter. I do not color the eggs.(white on white) and it is cold, which makes this type of water balloon fight even more fun and challenging. You gotta do something fun when you have 6 months of Winter…hahaha

    Family Fun tips
We don’t have kids now, but I used to do these things when I was a kid, and did them with my students…Making salt dough. Kids can make it by themselves and depending on their age don’t need to bother anyone to do it! Blowing bubbles by making own bubble solution using dish soap and making your own wands with pipe cleaners. You wouldn’t believe how many kids think they can blow a square bubble! Making forts with couch cushions, chairs, blankets and pillows. Classic, but so novel to kids who have high tech lives!

There is a daily email I get called Charlotte on the Cheap. It has a lot of free family activities in the area. The library is a good source for cd’s and dvds. I also enter contests-primarily radio call in for free concert/play tickets.

Friday nights are nearly always Family Game & Movie Night in our house. We put on our PJs, play cards and/or board games and then the 5 of us snuggle up together to watch a movie we’ve borrowed from a friend or on DVR. Many of these nights result in all 5 of us falling asleep in the family room together. Our kids refer to this as “camping in”.
