When I received the OptiGrill, I thought it looked just like my panini press that we use all the time. Not until I started reading up on the T-fal OptiGrill, did I realize everything that it could cook, but that it just must might also replace my panini.
Simply put, the OptiGrill in an indoor grill that *magically* adjusts the cooking time depending on the thickness and number of pieces of food being cooked. Ok, I can’t technically say it is magic so lets just call it advanced technology.
Set up and selection of the OptiGrill settings is easy to work. The first button is the power on, the snowflake button is if your food is frozen. Then the next set of buttons are for the foods: Burger, Poultry, Sandwich, Sausage/Pork, Red Meat and Fish/Seafood. Plus there is a manual mode for a fixed temperature for foods like fruits and vegetables. So you see, it cooks more than just a panini sandwich! Once you select your buttons, hit OK and the machines *magic* starts to happen. The indicator light tells you what stage in the game you are, from pre-heating through cooking to even just warming. Plus it beeps at each level of cooking. How easy is that?
For my first try, I made three burgers, as you can see they pretty much filled up the grill. My next try I was able to get four burgers to fit. Depending on the size of the burgers, you could conceivably get six on but they would be pretty small. So my only concern would be trying to make burgers for a family of five, like I have. I am feeding 3 boys and a husband so little burgers are not an option in this house! The only benefit to having to wait to cook a second round of burgers is that they cook fast since you have heat on both the top and bottom.
Ta-da…my well done burger. I couldn’t believe it when the light turned red. It only took about 10-12 minutes for it to cook. I thought there is no way that it is fully cooked…well just look at it! It was juicy too. Usually when we cook on the grill, my well done burgers turn out to be a little brick bats but with the OptiGrill it still retained the flavor and juiciness. My creation: a BBQ burger with shaved parmesan cheese topped with bacon on a dinner roll…yummo!
Clean up is easier than I thought too, the grill plates just pop off and can be placed in the dishwasher along with the drip tray. Easy Breezy. Needless to say we have safely secured a spot in the basement for our panini press!
