One of my best memories from grade school was when I beat the ‘brainy’ boy in class when we did our math game. For a long time I wasn’t fast enough to beat him and one day I finally did.

One of my favorite memories of school (a looong time ago, for me! lol) is the spelling bees. I was and still am, a pretty good speller. When I was in 4th grade, one other girl and myself stayed after school each day for our reading because we were reading at high school level. We both competed in the spelling bees. Boy, I LOVED school!

Well we are always a work in progress at our house but one thing we have learned that have help school morning to run smoothly is to lay out tomorrows clothes, tonight..even down to the under garments and accessories. Also packing the lunch the night before and just having to do the basic reassembling in the morning, helps things run quickly and smoothly.

Each child is assigned a color (their favorite) and all of their supplies, book covers, bags, water bottles …are primarily their color. I still put names on things so things don’t get lost at school as easily. The last of my children are in high school and I still use the color system. It makes it easier to make sure the right child has the right text book, uniform, homework… Teenagers want to sleep as as long as possible, think as little as possible in the morning and just take care of what they have to: getting dressed, primped,food/coffee and out the door. Wait that sounds like us parents!

My tip for getting younger students ready and excited about the fall is to set up a few playdates with students you know will be in your child’s classroom as the school year approaches. Our semester starts in September so during August I try to arrange a few playdates for my soon-to-be first grader. This way he’ll feel more comfortable knowing he will have a few friendly faces in the fall.

My fourth grade teacher was my favorite teacher! She made learning so much fun which made me look forward to school each day. It was because of her that I wanted to become a teacher, and I did! I taught third grade for 6 years.

My favorite memories from elementary school was always the back-to-school shopping. My mom went hog-wild with shopping before school started so that I had a completely new wardrobe. Sadly, I can’t offer the same to my kids. With 4 of them, I am able to buy each kid a new outfit for the first day, but I just replace clothing when it gets worn out throughout the year.

I keep a stockpile of standard school supplies, but I don’t go shopping for the school year until AFTER school starts – and I get the list of what each kid needs from the teacher.

My oldest is just starting kindergarten so I don’t have tips yet. But my biggest memory is from Kindergarten. Our class was doing a Say No To Drugs video (it was the 80s where all drugs were still considered bad) and I was the director so I had to do this monologue at the beginning. We had one day to do the shoot because it was for a tv contest and I had the chicken pox. My teacher picked me up at my house, they moved all the elementary students to the gym for an extra recess and I recorded my part and went home. Luckily, we won. I was interviewed on tv and they asked why I had spots all over my face. 😀

My memory from grade school, is when we were kindergarten/first grade, we would take trips to the school library. While their the librarian would read us a story (and be totally into it). After this she would take the personal time with each of us to help us find the book we wanted. I know she was just doing her job, but she was doing it well and full of energy. I credit her with some of my current love of reading.
